Pinewood Derby

TJ's Pinewood Derby was well set-up and fun. He did a great job designing, cutting, painting, and decorating his own car (I made the car last year). He definitely did better than I did last year (the third pic shows his "Scorpion" winning the race in the right lane).

Way to go TJ!

Wow, it looks like you guys have a real hi-tech PWD.

Great job TJ! I loved your car. I hope you are enjoying the beginning of Spring Break. (Is your mom making you clean your room, too?)

Just out of curiosity, what tools did you let him use? I would like my boys to actually cut this year, but don't think they're ready for the jigsaw yet. I think the more the boys are involved, the better the experience for them. Ours isn't until next month.

TJ's tools for cutting were a plain old hacksaw and a basic dremel with a sander head (neither had seen any action since last year's car). I just helped by placing the wood block in a vise and watching over as he 'hacked' away and encouraged him to make 'battle damage' with the dremel so he didn't have to feel like he had to make it perfect. If you look at the older post where he was making the car you'll see he was wearing swim goggles for eye protection (he decided to get something all on his own)!

In the third picture it looks like either TJ isn't too interested in how his car did, or he was so confident he knew he would win!?
